A Content Analysis of Career Development Theory, Research, and Practice-2013

This article has results integrated in career counseling and development literature of content analysis of referred journal articles. The results indicated that topic content in journals evolved slowly with limited integration of theory, research, and practice. Noted was research questions that was specifically addressed: (1) content topics (2) extent are theory, research, and practice integrated in career development articles (3) variation exists in the characteristics of career development articles (4) variation content included in theory, research, and practice articles. All these referred journals are from 2013 published articles. In order to understand and review previous CDQ annual reviews, we had to identify common trends.
Studies on the content analyses from CDQ Annual reviews provided for the past 25 years is considered a robust source of data. Therefore believing that the headings and subheadings provides appropriate data for analyzing the content of the career development field. There are concepts that continue to be important, and were intermittently mentioned in past includes life-career development, self-efficacy, work-life/family balance, career transitions, and disability. There were concepts mentioned more recently over the 5 to 10 years that were not emphasized. It is notable that this trend suggests that concepts originally in CDQ overviews tends to be somewhat consist overtime.
In the content analyses from career journals and the CDQ annual reviews, it is clear that career development literature is a balance of consistency and change. There are core elements listed in this profession. They include: theory, research, and practice. All three have antecedents of some type and interact to varying degrees with one another. Theory guides research in vocational behavior by guiding the formulation of research questions, creating measures of various constructs, and interpreting the results. Theory guides research on career development and practices as well. This influence of theory research may not be fully realized. As with research articles, there must be enough detailed information in order for another individual to replicate the study.
