Managerial Hostility and Attitudes towards Unions: A
Canada- US Comparison

This article explain findings by the differential effect of perceived union power, which is greater in Canada than the US and which is correlated negatively with union approval. We will also explore whether there is greater attitudinal hostility to unions in the U.S. The implication is that of Canadian managers faced the same labor relations playing field as their US counterparts, they would likely find it easier to thwart union certification drivers as well. Our estimates indicate that American manager’s attitudes towards unions are, perhaps surprise, less hostile than those of Canadian managers. It is also noted that US managers are less likely to use extreme methods to oppose union organizing drivers, implying that the lower union rates in the US as compared to Canada are likely to have negativity towards unions themselves.

Labor Unions: A Public Health Institution

This article reviews how using the social-ecological framework in underlying inequalities and social determinants of health. With steady decline in union membership, mainstream media often elects to discuss unions as a relic of the past. We have seen how many political and government figures try to erase them from our collective memory. By using the social-ecological models as a framework for analysis, these efforts shows how unions have helped create healthier workers, workplaces, and communities. Senator John F. Kennedy’s statement about the union is mentioned on how the union has “Brought Justice and democracy to the shop floor”.

Workers, Unions, and Takeovers

This article demonstrates how takeovers affect workers’ wages and job security in the short-run. With the Right-to-work laws, these adverse effects are exacerbated when established. In this study, the impact was during the merger negotiations between Delta Airlines and northwest Airlines. In the two main limitations the inconclusive evidence of mergers impacts labor. Second, acquirers do not choose target firms randomly, which leads to a selection bias problems.
